At first, you may not think it, but Fractions are a big part of real life. You will use fractions when telling the time (e.g: a quarter past six), when buying goods (e.g: three-quarters of a metre of material), when cooking from a recipe (e.g: a third of a litre of milk), when there is a sale while shopping (e.g: 'half price' on a pair of shoes), and when you share food (e.g: 'We each get a fifth of the birthday cake'). Clearly, mastering fractions is an important skill to have.
As a continuation on from our class work, this part of the website has been designed to strengthen your knowledge and skills in relation to fractions. Using TWO activities, we will be focusing on: Adding fractions with unlike denominators (Activity ONE: Fraction Bingo) and Solving number and word problems with the whole class (Activity TWO: Kahoot Quiz).
But first... Click the video on the right to revise strategies for adding together fractions that have unlike denominators.
In this example, 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator.
